In January 2012 a new program began in Canandaigua working in cooperation with selected agencies that serve low income children and families. While we currently work with many Canandaigua families through our WIC Partnership, this new Canandaigua Community Programallows us to reach even more families.
All Community Programs gift a free "bundle of books" to babies up to 24 months of age, and their siblings along with our Parent Guide that provides tips and information for parents about reading to their children and the importance of making reading a part their family's daily routine. The bundles are personally delivered by Budding Readers volunteers who are mostly current or retired educators. To date, 399 "bundles of books" have been delivered to families in the school district communities served by Budding Readers.
"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read."
