"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."

        Community Programs

Budding Readers has programs in the seven Ontario County communities served by the Bloomfield, Canandaigua*, Honeoye, Marcus Whitman, Midlakes, Naples, Red Jacket, Victor School Districts.

All Community Programs gift a free "bundle of books" to babies up to 24 months of age along with our Parent Guide that contains tips for parents about reading to their children and the importance of making reading a part their family's daily routine. In addition, a gift of age-appropriate books is provided to siblings through age 7. The bundles are personally delivered by Budding Readers volunteers who are mostly current or retired educators.  To date, more than 1,380 "bundles of books" have been delivered to families in the seven school district communities served by Budding Readers.

The Budding Readers programs in Canandaigua and Victor work through our partnership with the Finger Lakes WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program to provide "bundles of books" to interested WIC families who live in the Canandaigua and Victor School Districts and have babies under 24 months of age. Books for siblings through age 7 are also provided.

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read."
